BUDAYA PENGGUNAAN SUMPIT OLEH ETNIS TIONGHOA DI KOTA YOGYAKARTA

INTISARI Penelitian ini membahas tentang budaya penggunaan sumpit oleh etnis Tionghoa yang berdomisili di Kota Yogyakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui intensitas penggunaan sumpit oleh etnis Tionghoa di Kota Yogyakarta, faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi etnis Tionghoa dalam menggunakan sumpit dan bagaimana upaya etnis Tionghoa dalam melestarikan budaya penggunaan sumpit. Kebudayaan etnis Tionghoa sangatlah beragam, salah satunya adalah penggunaan sumpit. Namun identifikasi budaya etnis Tionghoa di Yogyakarta dapat menipis dikarenakan pengaruh budaya lokal dimana etnis Tionghoa tersebut tinggal. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode studi pustaka, kuesioner dan wawancara dengan generasi muda dan generasi tua etnis Tionghoa di Kota Yogyakarta. Berdasarkan hasil kuesioner yang diisi oleh 119 responden dan wawancara dengan 20 responden, dapat diketahui bahwa mayoritas etnis Tionghoa di Kota Yogyakarta tidak menggunakan sumpit sebagai alat makan sehari-hari. Meskipun begitu sebagian besar etnis Tionghoa yang ada di Kota Yogyakarta menilai sumpit adalah hal yang penting sebagai salah satu identitas etnis Tionghoa dan beberapa dari etnis Tionghoa tersebut masih melestarikan budaya penggunaan sumpit ke generasi yang lebih muda.

ABSTRACT This study discusses about the culture of using chopsticks in Chinese ethnic whose live in Yogyakarta City. The purpose of this study is to know the intensity of Chinese ethnic in using chopsticks and the efforts of Chinese ethnic in trying to continue the culture of using chopsticks. The Chinese ethnic culture is very diverse, and one of is the culture of using chopsticks. However, the identification of Chinese ethnic culture in Yogyakarta can be decrease due to the influence of local culture where the Chinese ethnic live. The methods that used in this study are literature study, a questionnaire and an interview with the young and old generation of Chinese ethnic in Yogyakarta. Based on the results of a questionnaire filled by 119 respondents and interviews with 20 respondents, it can be seen that the majority of Chinese ethnic in Yogyakarta do not use chopsticks as a daily eating tool. Even so, most of Chinese ethnic in Yogyakarta said that chopsticks is an important value in Chinese cultural as one of the Chinese ethnic identities and several Chinese ethnic still continue the culture of using chopsticks to the young generation.
