Perubahan Sosial Ekonomi dan Politik Masyarakat Tionghoa di Tanjungpinang 1825-1930an

Penelitian ini membahas tentang masyarakat Tionghoa di Tanjungpinang yang meliputi perubahan sosial ekonomi dan politik serta hubungan mereka dengan penduduk pribumi dan Belanda. Adapun permasalahan yang ingin dijawab adalah perubahan-perubahan apa saja yang terjadi pada aspek-aspek tersebut dan faktor apa yang mempengaruhi perubahan tersebut. Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut tesis ini menggunakan berbagai sumber sejarah yang bersifat primer dan sekunder seperti arsip-arsip kolonial, terbitan-terbitan resmi kolonial, koran yang sezaman dan berbagai literatur yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa perubahan sosial masyarakat Tionghoa dalam bidang sosial-ekonomi dipengaruhi oleh faktor eksternal dan internal. Faktor eksternal meliputi kebijakan Pemerintah Hindia Belanda dan kondisi global dan nasional pada awal abad ke-20, sedangkan faktor internal adalah posisi demografis mereka yang menjadi mayoritas dengan besaran mencapai sekitar 60%. Selain itu, mereka memiliki jaringan ekonomi dan kemampuan mengakumulasi modal, sehingga memudahkan mereka dalam menguasai perekonomian di Tanjungpinang. Dalam perkembangannya, mereka menjalin hubungan mutualistik dengan penduduk pribumi terutama di bidang perdagangan dan sosial. Sementara itu, hubungan mereka dengan Belanda cenderung berubah-ubah, seiring sikap mereka yang pragmatis. Artinya, di satu sisi Belanda membutuhkan orang Tionghoa (terutama elit) untuk mengontrol kehidupan sosial dan memanfaatkan posisi mereka secara ekonomi. Di sisi yang lain orang Belanda bersikap memusuhi maupun menjaga jarak terhadap pergerakan dan orientasi politik orang Tionghoa yang merugikan Pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Hal ini disebabkan karena sejak awal abad ke-20 muncul dinamika politik baru dikalangan Etnis Tionghoa seperti pendidikan, nasionalis, komunis, dan serikat rahasia yang bersifat kriminalistik.

This study discusses the Chinese community in Tanjungpinang which includes socio-economic and political changes and their relations with the indigenous and Dutch population. The problem that wants to be answered is what changes occur in these aspects and what factors influence the change. To address this problem, this thesis uses primary and secondary historical sources such as colonial archives, colonial official publications, contemporary newspapers and relevant literature. This study finds out that the dynamics of Chinese society activity in the socio-economic field are influenced by external and internal factors. The external factors include the policies of the Netherlands Indies Government and global and national conditions at the beginning of the 20th century, whereas the internal factor is their demographic position as majority group about of about 60% population. In addition, they have an economic network and the ability to accumulate capital, making it easier for them to dominate the economy in Tanjungpinang. In the course of time, they established a mutualistic relationship with the indigenous population, especially in commerce and social life. Meanwhile, their relationship with the Dutch was to changing overtime, because of the pragmatic attitude of the Dutch towards the Chinese. On one hand the Dutch needed the Chinese (especially the elite) to control social life of chinese community and to take advantage of their economic position. On the other hand, the Dutch was hostile against the Chinese movement and the political orientation which threatened the Government of the Netherlands East Indies. This has to do with the rise of new political dynamics among Chinese, such as education, nationalist, communist, and criminal allies of the secret society since the early 20th century
