Sustaining Racism through American Popular Culture: Looking at Racism in Hollywood Comedy Movies

Di abad 21, Amerika dianggap telah memasuki era post-rasial di mana tidak ada lagi preferensi rasial, diskriminasi dan prasangka terhadap kaum minoritas seperti Afrika Amerika. Pembahasan tentang ras dan rasisme dianggap tidak relevan lagi dengan kondisi sosial masyarakat Amerika saat ini. Hal ini juga dapat dilihat dalam film-film Hollywood yang mulai menghilangkan citra dan stereotip negatif dari Afrika Amerika. Keberadaan aktor dan aktris Afrika Amerika dalam industri perfilman Hollywood juga semakin meningkat di abad 21. Peran mereka telah berkembang, tidak hanya sebatas karakter antagonis atau pemain pendukung, namun telah dilibatkan sebagai pemain utama bahkan memainkan karakter pahlawan. Beberapa film yang melibatkan aktor dan aktris Afrika Amerika juga berhasil menjadi film Box Office. Selain itu, aktor dan aktris Afrika Amerika juga berhasil masuk dalam beberapa nominasi kategori penghargaan perfilman seperti Oscars, bahkan beberapa dari mereka memenangkan penghargaan tersebut. Namun bukan berarti rasisme hilang dari industri perfilman Hollywood, terutama dalam film-film komedi. Film bergenre komedi adalah film yang paling banyak melibatkan aktor dan aktris Afrika Amerika. Stereotip-stereotip dari Afrika Amerika juga sering dijadikan humor dalam film komedi. Oleh karena itu, film bergenre komedi sangat erat kaitannya dengan rasisme. Namun, film-film komedi dalam kurun waktu satu dekade terakhir seperti Evan Almighty (2007), Wild Hogs (2007), Meet Dave (2008), The Maiden Heist (2009), Last Vegas (2013), Someone Marry Barry (2014), dan Going in Style (2017) tidak memperlihatkan rasisme di permukaannya. Dengan menggunakan Interdiciplinary sebagai pendekatan, penelitian ini mencoba untuk melihat bagaimana representasi rasisme dalam film-film komedi Hollywood terutama dalam kurun waktu satu dekade terakhir. Teori representasi digunakan untuk menterjemahkan gambar, adegan dan percakapan dari tujuh film komedi terpilih terkait dengan rasisme. Sementara itu, teori humor digunakan untuk melihat bagaimana rasisme memunculkan humor melalui karakter-karakter Afrika Amerika. Temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa citra dan stereotip negatif Afrika Amerika masih dipertahankan dan karakter kulit putih digambarkan berlawanan dengan penggambaran negatif tersebut. Penggambaran ini dimunculkan secara tersembunyi. Sementara itu, rasisme yang diperlihatkan secara terang-terangan menunjukkan bahwa karakter-karakter Afrika Amerika dijadikan sebagai bahan untuk memunculkan humor dalam film-film komedi tersebut.

The United States is considered has entered the post-racial era in the 21st century where racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice towards minorities such as African American are no longer exists. The discussion about race and racism are deemed no longer relevant to the social condition of American society today. It can also be seen in Hollywood movies that begin to eliminate the negative images and stereotypes of African American. The existences of African American actors and actresses in the 21st century Hollywood movie industry are also increasing. Their role has grown, not only limited to antagonist or supporting characters but has been involved as the main or hero characters. Several movies that involve African American actors and actress also succeeded in becoming the Box Office. African American actors and actresses also successfully made into the nomination of several categories in movie awards such as Oscars, even some of them managed to win it. However, it does not mean that racism vanished from the Hollywood movie industry, especially in comedy movies. Comedy movie is one of the genres that often involving African American actors and actresses. Their stereotypes also commonly used to make humor in the narrative. Therefore, this genre is closely related to racism. However, comedy movies in the last decade such as Evan Almighty (2007), Wild Hogs (2007), Meet Dave (2008), The Maiden Heist (2009), Last Vegas (2013), Someone Marry Barry (2014), and Going in Style (2017) are not showing any racism on the surface. By using Interdisciplinary as the approach, this research attempts to see how Hollywood represents racism in comedy movies, especially in the last decade. The theory of representation is employed to interpret the images, scenes, and dialogues from seven selected comedy movies in relation to racism. Meanwhile, the theory of humor is used to find out how racism makes humor occur through the characters of African American. The finding of this research indicates that negative images and stereotypes of African Americans are still sustained and White characters are depicted as the opposite. These depictions are shown covertly. Meanwhile, overt racism shows that the characters of African American are used to make humor occur in the comedy movies.
