COMMISSIVE SPEECH ACTS IN THE 2016 UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES

Riset ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tindak tutur komisif yang terdapat pada debat calon presiden Amerika Serikat tahun 2016. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menerapkan teori tindak tutur Searle dan Vanderveken. Tindak tutur komisif yang diteliti adalah janji, jaminan, ancaman, penerimaan, dan penolakan. Data untuk penilitian ini adalah ungkapan komisif tentang kebijakan luar negeri Amerika Serikat yang berfokus pada enam isu penting: energi; imigrasi; Timur Tengah: Suriah, Irak, NIIS; NATO dan Russia; dan proliferasi nuklir. Dari transkrip ketiga debat, ditemukan total 114 tindak tutur komisif ditemukan. Janji adalah tindak tutur paling dominan dengan 55 ungkapan karena sifat kenetralannya, sedangkan ancaman adalah yang terjarang dengan dua ungkapan karena sifatnya yang agresif. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa latar belakang kandidat mempengaruhi baik preferensi tindak tutur tertentu maupun aspek-aspek leksikalnya.

This research aims to investigate the commissive speech acts in the 2016 U.S. presidential debates. The analysis is conducted by applying speech act theory proposed by Searle and Vanderveken. The commissive speech act analyzed are promise, assurance, threat, acceptance, and refusal. The data are commissive utterances regarding U.S. foreign policy that focuses on the six key issues: economic trade; energy, immigration; Middle East: Syria, Iraq, ISIS; NATO and Russia; and nuclear proliferation. From the transcripts of all the three debates, there are the total of 114 commissive utterances found. Promise is the most dominant with 55 occurrences because of its neutrality, meanwhile threat is the rarest with two occurrences because of its considerably aggressive characteristics. The research concludes that the background of the candidates affect both the preference of performing certain types of commissive speech acts and the lexical aspects of each.
