Power Struggle in Hegemonical Regime as Portrayed in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk membahas pergulatan kuasa di buku Ken Kesey berjudul One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Penulis menggunakan konsep Hegemoni Gramscian untuk membahas isu perihal kekuasaan di dalam institusi rumah sakit jiwa yang digambarkan di dalam cerita. Selagi juga mengambil perspektif sosio-historis Amerika pasca perang tahun 1950an untuk mendapatkan konteks sejarah di dalam fiksi tersebut. Studi ini terfokus pada kontestasi kuasa antara Suster Ratched dan McMurphy. Yang keduanya merepresentasikan dua bentuk masyarakat Amerika pada saat itu. Suster Ratched menggambarkan sikap dominan Amerika tahun 50an yang konformis dan McMurphy hadir sebagai suara alternatif untuk pasien di dalam institusi kejiwaan tersebut. Fokus penelitian ini adalah aspek-aspek yang telah disebutkan di atas, dan menggunakan data utama dari novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Hasil dari analisis ini adalah ketika Suster Ratched berusaha untuk menjaga kekuasaannya di dalam institusi, terdapat juga oposisi alternatif bertujuan untuk menjatuhkan rezim hegemoni tersebut. Menghadirkan pemberontakan sebagai cara untuk meraih ulang kesadaran yang tertindas dialami oleh para pasien, McMurphy berhasil memperlihatkan usahanya tidak sia-sia untuk menanggulangi penindasan mereka.

This undergraduate thesis aims to analyse power struggle in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The writer employed Gramscian concept of Hegemony to discuss the issues regarding power within the mental institution portrayed in the fiction. While also drawing parallels from the socio-historical perspective of post-war 1950s America to grasp the context of the fiction. This study mainly focused on the contestation of power between Nurse Ratched and McMurphy. Both of whom representing either sides of American society at the times. Nurse Ratched portrays the dominant, conformist, attitude of American fifties while McMurphy stands out as an alternative voice for the patients inside the mental institution. Focusing on these mentioned aspects, this undergraduate thesis used the data mainly from excerpts of the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The result of the analysis is that while Nurse Ratched attempts to maintain her power inside the institution, there could be also alternatives for opposising party to subvert the hegemonic regime. While showcasing his rebellion as a means to regain the subjected party oppressed consciousness, McMurphy successfully showed his efforts not unfruitful for other people to overcome their oppression.
