Clash between Religious Belief and Sexual Orientation in Identity Construction Presented in Kyell Gold's The Time He Desires

Kyell Gold, seorang penulis kisah-kisah dengan karakter binatang dengan sifat manusia, pada tahun 2016 menerbitkan sebuah novel yang menggambarkan Muslim gay di Amerika berjudul The Time He Desires. Isu tersebut terus meningkat di Amerika pada satu dekade terakhir terutama sejak munculnya beberapa komunitas yang fokus pada keanekaragaman seksualitas dan gender para Muslim. Studi ini diadakan untuk memahami persimpangan identitas yang menjadi masalah rumit bagi Muslim homoseksual. Novel ini dianalisa menggunakan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Jaspal dan Breakwel yakni Teori Proses Identitas. Seluruh kata di dalam novel menjadi sumber data yang merepresentasikan proses pembentukan identitas para Muslim homoseksual di Amerika. Hasilnya, dari analisa tersebut diketahui bahwa identitas bersifat dinamis yakni dapat berubah-ubah. Terdapat dua pengaruh yang memberi dampak terhadap dalam proses identitas yakni pengaruh personal dan sosial. Ketika menghadapi pengaruh-pengaruh tersebut, Muslim homoseksual memanfaatkan strategi-strategi yang berbeda untuk mengatasinya. Kesimpulannya, terdapat tiga tipe Muslim homoseksual di Amerika. Muslim homoseksual dengan pemahaman konservatif terhadap ajaran Islam yang memegang teguh keimanannya dan tidak melakukan tindakan apapun atas dorongan homoseksualnya. Muslim homoseksual yang tidak percaya lagi dengan iman mereka dan membiarkannya pergi hingga akhirnya mereka hidup sebagai homoseksual. Muslim gay dengan pemahaman liberal terhadap ajaran Islam khususnya tentang homoseksualitas yang memutuskan memeluk Islam dan homoseksual. Dengan demikian, setelah melewati proses identitas terdapat tiga tipe identitas yakni homoseksual tanpa identitas Muslim lagi atau memiliki identitas homoseksual saja, homoseksual dengan Muslim sebagai identitas agama yang terbagi menjadi dua; yang tidak bertindak atas dorongan homoseksual mereka, dan yang bertindak untuk memenuhi dorongan homoseksualnya. Sebagai tambahan, ini mencerminkan adanya gerakan Muslim Amerika terutama yang mengaku sebagai homoseksual, semakin banyak yang cenderung untuk memeluk ajaran Islam progresif dan liberal daripada konservatif.

Kyell Gold, an author of anthropomorphic stories published a novel that portrays American Muslims gay in last 2016 entitles The Time He Desires. The issue is raising in America in the last decade since the emergence of some communities with the concern of Muslims' sex and gender diversities. This study is conducted in order to understand their intersection identity as one of the complicated problems they faced. The novel is examined using Jaspal and Breakwell's theory on Identity Process Theory. The words in the novel are treated as a data source that represents the reality of American Muslims gay in their processes of identity construction. As a result, it is known that identity is dynamic, it can changes. There are personal and social influences that impact the identity process. When dealing with the influences, Muslims gay utilized different strategies to cope with. In short, there are three types of American Muslims gay. Muslims gay with conservative understanding of Islamic teaching who hold their faith would not act on their homosexual urge. Muslims gay who disbelief their faith anymore, and let it go that eventually, they live as homosexuals. Muslims gay with liberal understanding toward Islamic teaching especially about homosexuality that holds both of Islam and homosexual. Thus, after passing the identity process these three types are gay without Muslim identity anymore or having homosexual identity only, gay with Muslim as a religious identity that divided into two the one who does not act on their urge, and the other is who act on it. Additionally, it reflects that there is a movement of American Muslims, especially who claimed to be gay that more and more who tend to embrace progressive and liberal Islamic teachings than the conservative.
