Relasi di dalam masyarakat dewasa ini tidaklah lepas dari corak relasi personal yang mana dunia pendidikan menjadi bagian di dalamnya. Tesis ini fokus pada hubungan antara dosen dan mahasiswa yang terjalin di Universitas Hasanuddin. Tidak bisa dipungkiri bahwa masyarakat masa kini termasuk dosen dan mahasiswa juga memerlukan relasi personal ini sehingga mereka terus memelihara relasi tersebut. Tesis ini berusaha menjelaskan lebih jauh relasi-relasi yang ada di perguruan tinggi. Tidak hanya relasi kekerabatan saja yang masih cukup mewarnai. Tetapi kompleksnya komposisi dalam masyarakat yang diisi oleh berbagai kalangan dari berbagai daerah membuat relasi kekerabatan sudah sulit untuk digunakan. Mereka mulai mencari relasi yang dianggap dapat memberikan keuntungan bagi dirinya sehingga dapat mempertahankan diri di lingkungan yang baru. Relasi tersebut adalah relasi pertemanan dan relasi patron-klien. Kedua bentuk relasi ini nyatanya tidak hanya dijumpai pada masyarakat pada umumnya, tetapi relasi ini dapat ditemui di dunia pendidikan yang idealnya lingkungan ini tidaklah mengedepankan relasi personal. Pada prakteknya, relasi personal justru mewarnai denyut nadi kehidupan di kampus dan dipertahankan oleh pihak yang terlibat di dalamnya. Tesis ini akan berusaha menjawab alasan dipertahankannya relasi personal di lingkungan perguruan tinggi.

A relationship in a society today is inseparable from the aspect of personal relationships, with the education life to take a part in it. This thesis focuses on the relationship between lecturers and students intertwined in Hasanuddin University. It is undeniable that today's society, including lecturers and students, also need this kind of personal relationship for some beneficial reasons. That is why they keep maintaining this kind of relationship. This thesis aims to explain further the relationships that exist in colleges. Not only kinship relationship that operated in campus. The complexity of the social elements composed by various groups coming from various regions causes the kinship relationship is difficult to apply. They begin to looking for other relationships that are considered advantageous to defend themselves in a new environment. Two such personal relationships are the friendship and the patron-client relationship. This personal relationship is not only found in a peasant and homogeneous society, but it can also be encountered in education life that normally does not emphasize personal relationships. In practice, the personal relationship even adds to the diversity of social interactions on campus and therefore, it is maintained by the beneficiaries. This thesis is finally going to formulate the reasons for maintaining the personal relationship in the university.
