American Jews as a White Ethnic with Whiteness as a Marking Power: a Sociological Approach

Yahudi Amerika adalah salah satu kelompok etnis berkulit putih yang telah menikmati eksklusifitas dari hak istimewa yang diterima kaum kulit putih. Salah satu dari hak istimewa ini adalah adanya perbedaan perlakuan dari masyarakat terhadap kaum kulit putih, dan hal ini berhubungan pula dengan kekuasaan. Namun, banyak dari kaum Yahudi Amerika yang menolak dinisbatkan sebagai kulit putih dan menyatakan bahwa mereka adalah kaum Yahudi. Mereka lebih memilih untuk menonjolkan kelompok etnis mereka dibandingkan dengan penggolongan berdasarkan warna kulit. Hal ini menyebabkan kaum Yahudi Amerika terbelah menjadi dua, yaitu yang mengakui bahwa mereka adalah kulit putih (yang dengan sendirinya mengakui ke-eksklusifitasan kaum putih) serta yang mengakui diri sebagai Yahudi (yang mana menolak atau tidak menyadari akan hak istimewa yang dimiliki kaum kulit putih). Oleh karenanya, penulis memformulasikan dua rumusan masalah dalam menganalisis isu tersebut, yaitu: (1) mengapa warna kulit putih dapat dipertimbangkan sebagai tanda kepemilikan kekuasaan dalam kahidupan kaum Yahudi Amerika dan (2) bagaimana kaum Yahudi Amerika dapat disebut sebagai kaum etnis berkulit putih. Dalam thesis ini, teori Identitas Sosial (Social Identity) digunakan sebagai pendekatan sekaligus teori dalam menjawab permasalahan tersebut karena analisis penelitian ini menggunakan sudut pandang in-group serta out-group yang memisahkan kelompok kita dan kelompok mereka, sehingga dapat terlihat bagaimana sudut pandang dari in-group tersebut. Berhubungan dengan perubahan status social kaum Yahudi Amerika, maka teori ini pun digunakan untuk menjelaskan pergerakan serta perubahan social yang terjadi dalam masyarakat. Pendekatan sejarah pun digunakan guna menjelaskan latar belakang sejarah kaum Yahudi Amerika serta poin-poin yang mengubah status social kaum Yahudi Amerika. Sedangkan metode penelitian yang diaplikasikan dalam tesis ini adalah analisis dokumen. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa hak istimewa kulit putih merupakan bagian yang penting dalam kehidupan kaum Yahudi Amerika karena kulit putih atau warna kulit adalah dasar dalam pembagian status social dalam kehidupan masyarakat Amerika. Walaupun mereka mengklaim bahwa Amerika adalah negara multirasial, namun rasisme atas warna kulit masih sangat berpengaruh dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penisbatan kaum Yahudi Amerika sebagai etnis berkulit putih pun tidak terlepas dari pengaruh kekuatan politik kaum Yahudi Amerika yang sangat kuat. Kemiripan warna kulit mereka dengan warna kulit kaum WASP pun membuat mereka lebih mudah membaur dengan masyarakat mayoritas. Prestasi yang dicapai oleh kaum Yahudi Amerika saat ini tidak terlepas dari status mereka sebagai kaum etnis berkulit putih. Dengan menggunakan teori identitas social, kaum Yahudi Amerika dapat lebih menyadari keanggotaan mereka sebagai kelompok etnik, serta penggolongan mereka dalam kelompok kulit putih. Hal ini diharapkan dapat mencegah terjadinya color blind racism dan mengurangi adanya rasisme dalam masyarakat.

American Jews is one of the white ethnics that have enjoyed the white privilege. One of the privileges is the difference in treatment received by the white, and this is also connected with power. However, many of the American Jews refused to be categorized as white. Instead, they prefer to portray themselves as 'Jewish'. They choose to accentuate their ethnic group rather than being categorized by their skin color. Thus, this situation resulted in the American Jews being divided into two groups; the one who admit their whiteness along with its privilege and the other one who prefer to call themselves as Jewish, which refuse or oblivious to the existence of white privilege. Therefore, the researcher formulate two problems in analyzing these issues, they are: (1) why whiteness can be considered as the marking power in the American Jews life and (2) how the American Jews can be determined as white ethnic. In this thesis, the social identity theory is used as the approach as well as theory in analyzing and answering these issues because this research analysis applying the point of view of in-group and out-group which separating our group and their group. This theory also enable to show how the in group's point of view. In connected with the change of American Jews' social status, this theory also employed to explain the movement and social change and mobility that happen in the society. Historical approach also applied in order to describe the historical background of the American Jews as well as the important point of events that change the social status of the American Jews. Meanwhile, the research method that is employed in this thesis is document analysis. The result of this thesis showed that the white privilege is an important and vital part of the American Jews life because skin color particularly whiteness is the base line in social status distribution in the American society's life. Although they claimed that America is a multiracial country, however racism based on skin color still influence their daily activity. The appointment of the American Jews as a white ethnic also related to the strong influence of the American Jews' political power. The similarity of their skin color with the WASP also make them easier to pass or blend in with the white majority. The achievements that is gained by the American Jews today also connected to their status as a white ethnic. Using social identity theory, the American Jews can be more aware of their sense belonging towards their ethnic group and that they belong to the white skinned group. It is expected that once they become aware of this, the color blind racism also can be prohibited, which is also another way to reduce racism.
