The Impacts of Indonesian Government's Tourism Project in Mandalika on Lombok's Development

Pariwisata adalah industri sangat menguntungkan yang sering digunakan sebagai strategi pengembangan. Indonesia sebagai negara kepulauan memiliki banyak potensi di sektor pariwisata. Pemerintah Indonesia dewasa ini menetapkan pariwisata sebagai salah satu pilar pembangunan dan menetapkan 10 Destinasi Pariwisata Prioritas yang juga dinamakan sebagai "10 Bali Baru". Dari 10 destinasi, Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus Mandalika dianggap sebagai yang tersiap dan memiliki perkembangan tercepat pada perkembangan projek pariwisatanya. Penelitian ini akan membahas kepentingan Pemerintah Indonesia dalam memilih Mandalika sebagai fokus utama dan relasi projek pariwisata Mandalika terhadap pembangunan Lombok, khususnya Lombok Tengah. Projek pariwisata ini akan memiliki dampak melalui keterkaitan ke belakang (backward linkages) dan efek pengganda terhadap sektor lain. Projek ini membawa investasi asing, pembangunan infrastruktur, pembuatan lapangan kerja, dan peningkatan kapasitas sumber daya manusia. Di sisi lain, akan ada tantangan dan kemungkinan dampak buruk yang terjadi seperti kompetisi di pasar lapangan kerja dari provinsi atau daerah lain, inflasi harga-harga di daerah pariwisata, dan kerusakan lingkungan. Singkatnya, riset ini akan meneliti lebih lanjut implikasi dari projek pariwisata Mandalika terhadap pembangunan.

Tourism is a lucrative industry that often used as development strategy. Indonesia as an archipelagic country has a lot potentials in tourism. Indonesian government recently has designated tourism as one of the development pillar and has created 10 Destinasi Pariwisata Prioritas which they also called as the "10 New Balis". Out of the 10 destinations, Special Economic Zone of Mandalika is deemed as the readiest and has the fastest progress in the tourism development project. This research will discuss the urgency of the Indonesian government to put focus in Mandalika and the relations between the Mandalika tourism project and Lombok's development especially in Central Lombok. The tourism project will have impact through the tourism sector's backward linkages and multiplier effects to other sectors. There are FDIs, infrastructure project, the creation of jobs and employment, and an increase in human resources capacity. This tourism project will also be followed by challenges and possible negative impacts such as competition in labour market from other regions, inflation in tourism areas, and possible degradation in environment. In short, this research explores the implication of the Mandalika tourism project toward development.
