Ingo and the Exploitation: A Postcolonial Ecocritical Approach to Helen Dunmore's Ingo Tetralogy

Penelitian ini membahas tentang peran Ingo dan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan eksploitasi dalam tetralogi novel Ingo karya Helen Dunmore; Ingo, The Tide Knot, The Deep, dan The Crossing of Ingo. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memaparkan peran yang dimainkan Ingo dalam cerita dan juga faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi manusia untuk melakukan eksploitasi terhadap Ingo. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan postkolonial ekokritik sebagai kerangka teori dan studi pustaka sebagai metode penelitian. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam tetralogi novel Ingo, Ingo berperan sebagai latar tempat, perwakilan alam, dan simbol terjajah. Berdasarkan lingkungan sosial yang dapat dilihat dari cerita dalam novel, faktor-faktor yang dapat diasumsikan membawa eksploitasi terhadap Ingo adalah antroposentrisme dalam masyarakat modern, tradisi Yahudi-Kristen, dan hasrat manusia untuk menjadi yang paling hebat.

This research discusses the role of Ingo and the factors that cause the exploitation in Helen Dunmore’s Ingo tetralogy; Ingo, The Tide Knot, The Deep, and The Crossing of Ingo. The objectives of this research are to explain the role that Ingo play in the story and also the factors that lead humans to do such exploitation towards Ingo. This research employs the postcolonial ecocritical approach as its theoretical framework and the library research as its research method. The result of this research shows that in Ingo tetralogy, Ingo has role as the setting of place, the representative of nature, and the symbol of colonized. Based on the social environment which can be seen from the story of the novels, the factors which can be assumed to bring exploitation towards Ingo are the anthropocentrism in modern society, Judeo-Christian tradition, and human desire to become superior.
