The Flouting of Gricean Maxims through the Use of Rhetorical Devices to Create Humor in the TV Series Hannah Montana

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pelanggaran (flouting) maksim-maksim Grice melalui penggunaan alat retorika untuk menciptakan humor dalam serial TV Hannah Montana. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah ucapan-ucapan yang melanggar (flout) maksim-maksim Grice yang ditemukan dalam tujuh episode di musim pertama. Data dianalisa menggunakan Prinsip Kerjasama oleh Grice (1975) dan alat-alat retorika yang dikemukakan oleh Berger (1997). Secara keseluruhan, terdapat 126 kasus pelanggaran yang ditemukan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa para karakter paling banyak melanggar maksim kualitas dengan jumlah 60 kejadian. Ketika melanggar, hiperbola/exaggeration adalah alat retorika yang paling sering digunakan dengan jumlah 28 kejadian.

This research aims to examine the maxim flouting by using rhetorical devices in creating humor as seen in TV Series Hannah Montana. The data used in this research are utterances that flout the Gricean Maxims found in the first seven episodes of the first season. The data were analyzed by applying Cooperative Principle proposed by Berger (1975), and then based on the types of rhetorical devices proposed by Berger (1997). A total of 126 cases of flouting the Gricean Maxims were found. The results show that the characters flout the maxim of quality the most with 60 occurrences. In flouting the maxims, hyperbole/exaggeration is the most frequently used rhetorical device with 28 occurrences.
