RESPONSES TO SARCASM AS SEEN IN THREE STAR TREK MOVIES

Sarkasme sudah sering dipelajari di berbagai disiplin ilmu, seperti linguistik, psikologi, neurologi, sosiologi, dan bahkan studi lintas budaya. Namun demikian, pembawaannya yang seringkali mengundang kejengkelan sering menimbulkan berbagai macam respons dari pendengarnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi respons-respons terhadap sarkasme yang digunakan oleh tokoh-tokoh dalam tiga film Star Trek versi reboot. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mengamati respons terhadap sarkasme dan untuk mencari tahu pola-pola dalam memberi respons terhadap ungkapan sarkastik serta hubungannya dengan hubungan antarpersonal karakter. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari dialog dalam tiga film Star Trek, yang kemudian dikategorikan dalam 8 kategori respons menurut Eisterhold et al (2006). Kategorinya antara lain, tawa, literal, tanpa respons, senyum, nonverbal, sarkasme, ganti topik, dan komen metalinguistik. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa respons yang paling sering muncul adalah respons literal (29,41%), sedangkan respons yang paling jarang muncul adalah tawa(1,961%). Tidak ditemukan pola-pola tertentu dalam memberikan respons terhadap ucapan sarkastik dan hubungannya dengan hubungan antarpersonal antara kedua belah pihak. Tetapi, orang asing cenderung memberikan respons literal, tanpa respons, dan mengganti topik. Sementara, orang yang akrab cenderung memberikan berbagai macam respons.

Sarcasm has been widely studied in various disciplines, namely linguistics, psychology, neurology, sociology, and even cross-cultural studies. Its aggravating nature, however, often elicit various responses from the hearer. This study attempts to investigate responses to sarcasm employed by the characters of three Star Trek "reboot" version movies. It aims to examine responses to sarcasm and to reveal the pattern of responding to sarcastic remarks in relation to the characters' interpersonal relationship. The data used in this research were taken from the dialogues of the movies, and then were categorized to 8 classifications of responses proposed by Eisterhold et al (2006). The classifications are laughter, literal, zero response, smile, nonverbal, sarcasm, topic change, and metalinguistic comment. The study shows that the most frequent response conveyed by the characters is literal response (29.41%), whereas the least frequent response is laughter (1.961%). There is no pattern in responding to sarcastic remarks in relation to the interpersonal relationship between the interlocutors. However, strangers tend to respond in literal, zero response, and topic change. Meanwhile, close acquaintances tend to give various responses.
