Overcoming Death through Cryonics in James Halperin's The First Immortal and Mitch Albom's The Time Keeper

Pada tahun 1962, seorang ilmuwan Amerika bernama Robert Ettinger mengajukan sebuah konsep yang akan memungkinkan tercapainya hidup yang abadi. Konsep tersebut dikenal dengan sebutan cryonics. Penemuan ini memicu perbedaan pendapat di kalangan Amerika, termasuk pihak yang mendukung dan pihak yang menolak konsep tersebut. Perbedaan inilah yang ditangkap dan diilustrasikan oleh dua penulis Amerika dalam novelnya; The First Immortal dan The Time Keeper. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi sastra, kedua novel tersebut dianalisis sebagai landasan dalam mengungkap perspektif terhadap cryonics dan konsep keabadian. Diskusi dalam studi ini berfokus pada signifikansi cryonics dalam novel yang dibahas, bagaimana refleksinya dalam mayoritas Amerika, dan mengapa eksistensi cryonics menjadi penting di masyarakat Amerika. Hasil yang didapat menunjukkan bahwa penerimaan terhadap cryonics membagi masyarakat Amerika ke dalam dua perspektif; perspektif sains dan agama. Lebih lanjut, kedua perspektif ini menunjukkan kedinamisan masyarakat Amerika yang ternyata mengungkap bahwa pertentangan antar kedua perspektif tersebut berujung pada komodifikasi konsep kematian. Selain itu, eksistensi dari cryonics mengungkap tiga nilai yang terdapat dalam masyarakat Amerika, yaitu kesejahteraan ekonomi, sekularisme, dan keinginan untuk mengontrol.

In 1962, an American scientist named Robert Ettinger proposed a concept which premise is to enable humans achieving immortality. This concept is called cryonics. This invention sparks different reactions in society, including those who are in agreement and those who are against this idea. Two novelists illustrate these differences in two literary works; The First Immortal and The Time Keeper. Using sociology of literature, these novels are examined and treated as a foundation in revealing perspective toward immortality and cryonics. The discussion on this paper is focused on the significance of cryonics in the novels, how it is reflected in American reality, and why the existence of cryonics is essential in American society. The result indicate that there are two perspectives in dealing with cryonics and immortality in general, which are scientific and religious sides. These perspectives, furthermore, show the dynamic of American society which incidentally shows how the contestation ideas lead to commodification of the concept of death. Additionally, the existence of cryonics reveals three values that exist in American society; economic prosperity, secularism, and the desire to control.
