Code Switching In Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM

Alih kode, atau pergantian antara dua bahasa lazim terjadi di Indonesia, apalagi dengan adanya tambahan bahasa Inggris. Ini adalah topic yang menarik untuk dibahas karena frekuensi penggunaannya yang meningkat. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk memperkaya pengetahuan penulis dan pembaca tentang alih kode dengan cara mengidentifikasi tipe alih kode yang ditemukan di program Breakfast Show pada siaran Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM, serta mengidentifikasi fungsi dari alih kode yang ditemukan di program tersebut. Teori-teori utama yang digunakan di studi ini diusulkan oleh Wardhaugh (2006), Hoffmann (1991) dan Myers-Scotton (1989). Wardhaugh (2006) mengusulkan tipe-tipe alih kode yang terdiri dari alih kode intra kalimat dan alih kode antar kalimat, Myers-Scotton (1989) mengusulkan tipe alih kode intra kata, dan Hoffmann (1991) mengusulkan teori fungsi-fungsi alih kode. Studi ini dilakukan dengan desain penelitian kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan teknik rekam, lalu penulis membuat transkrip dari percakapan. Fokus dan lingkup studi adalah alih kode bahasa Indonesia – bahasa Inggris yang terjadi di antara percakapan dua penyiar Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM. Dari analisa, kejadian alih kode cocok dengan fungsi dan tipe alih kode yang digunakan untuk studi ini. Tipe alih kode intra kalimat dibagi menjadi level kata, frase, dan klausa. Mengindikasikan keberagaman tipe alih kode yang digunakan penyiar Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM. Untuk fungsi alih kode, kedelapan fungsi ditemukan dalam studi ini, mengindikasikan keberagaman alasan alih kode yang terjadi.

Code switching, or alternation between two languages is bound to happen in Indonesia, especially with the addition of English language. This is an interesting topic to be discussed because the increased frequency of its usage in daily conversation. The aim of this study is to enrich writer and reader’s knowledge about code switching by identifying the types of code switching that are found in Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM Breakfast Show program, as well as identifying the functions of code switching that are found in the program. The main theories used in this study are proposed by Wardhaugh (2006), Hoffmann (1991) and Myers-Scotton (1989). Wardhaugh (2006) proposed the types of code switching that consists of intra-sentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, Myers-Scotton (1989) proposed intra-word code switching, and Hoffmann (1991) proposed the theory abot the functions of code switching. This study is done by qualitative research design. The data collection is done by recording technique. The writer then transcribed the conversation. The focus and scope of this study is Indonesian – English code switching that happened in conversations between two Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM announcers Jerome and Vari. From the analysis, The code switching findings match the theories proposed for this study. It turns out that the types of intra-sentential code switching can be divided to word, phrase, and clause level, indicating the wide variation of code switching used by the announcers of Virgin Radio Jakarta 99.9 FM. Meanwhile, for functions of code switching, all eight types of code switchings are found in this study, indicating the various reasons of doing code switchings.
