Megan Hipwell's Personality Disorder as Depicted in Paula Hawkins's The Girl on the Train

Sebuah karya sastra merupakan gambaran dari setiap perkembangan yang ada pada kehidupan, tidak terkecuali perkembangan psikologis yang kerap tertuang melalui penggambaran gangguan kepribadian pada karakter fiksi dalam sebuah novel. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi karakteristik dan penyebab gangguan kepribadian borderline yang terlihat dalam novel The Girl on the Train karya Paula Hawkins. Penelitian ini berdasar pendekatan psikologi yang bertumpu pada teori gangguan kepribadian borderline yang dijelaskan oleh American Psychiatric Association dalam buku Dignostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Fokus dalam penelitian ini terdapat pada karakter fiktif bernama Megan Hipwell. Dalam DSM-5 dijelaskan bahwa seseorang menderita gangguan kepribadian borderline apabila menggambarkan minimal lima dari sembilan gejala kelainan. Sedangkan hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Megan Hipwell mengalami gangguan kepribadian borderline karena memiliki delapan dari sembilan gejala dari gangguan kepribadian tersebut. Dari penelitian ini juga ditemukan bahwa kematian dari kakak laki-laki Megan Hipwell, Ben, merupakan penyebab awal yang memicu munculnya penyimpangan perilaku Megan semasa remaja yang merujuk pada gangguan kepribadian borderline.

A literary work portrays every development that lies in any aspects of human life, including the psychological development that usually depicted in the personality disorder that portrayed by the fictional characters in a novel. This undergraduate thesis aims to identifies the symptoms and to investigate the causes of borderline personality disorder as seen in Paula Hawkins's novel entitled The Girl on the Train. This study is conducted using psychological approach based on borderline personality disorder theory as described by the American Psychiatric Association in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder Fifth-Edition (DSM-5). The focus of the research lies in the fictitious character in the book namely Megan Hipwell. In DSM-5, it is clearly describe that a person suffers from borderline personality disorder indicated by having at least five out of nine symptoms of the disorder. While the results of this study shows that Megan Hipwell implies eight out of nine symptoms of borderline personality disorder. Furthermore, this study also found that the death of Megan Hipwell's brother, Ben, is the initial root that triggers Megan Hipwell's destructive behavior during her adolescence age that leads her to suffer from borderline personality disorder.
