FAKTOR IDENTITAS DAN PERAN KELOMPOK VOTE LEAVE DALAM BRITISH EXIT

Penelitian ini berusaha untuk melihat pengaruh dari persepsi identitas dan peran kelompok kampanye Vote Leave terhadap keluarnya Inggris dari Uni Eropa pada referendum 23 Juni 2016. Dengan menggunakan perspektif kontruktivisme Wendt terhadap identitas, penelitian ini melihat bahwa Brexit tidak lepas dari pengaruh pembentukan persepsi identitas ke-Inggris-an sebagai great power yang terjadi dalam waktu yang lama sepanjang sejarah Inggris. Identitas yang terbentuk menunjukkan bahwa Inggris adalah entitas yang tidak dapat disatukan dengan Uni Eropa karena sejarah kehebatannya. Selain identitas, faktor lain yang bermain dalam Brexit adalah retorika kampanye kelompok Vote Leave yang berusaha membentuk persepsi bahwa identitas Inggris sebagai kekuatan dunia telah direnggut oleh Uni Eropa melalui berbagai intervensi yang tidak demokratis terhadap berbagai aspek politik dan kebijakan di dalam Inggris. Bagi Vote Leave, Brexit adalah jalan untuk mengembalikan identitas tersebut.

This research attempts to shed a light on how identity and the role of campaign group Vote Leave matter to the decision of most UK citizen to withdraw from European Union on the recent 23 June 2016 referendum. Using Wendtian constructivism perspective on identity, this research investigates that Brexit was not absent from the influence of Britishness identity construction as a historically long standing great power, in which the construction itself happened for a long period of time along with the history of the UK. The constructed identity shows that Britain is an entity unable to unify with European Union for its different history of greatness compared to those of other mainland European countries. Alongside identity factor is the rhetoric of campaign group Vote Leave which sought to construct a perception among British people that their identity of global power has been taken away by European Union, shown by its undemocratic intervention within the country's domestic politics. Brexit is perceived as the only way to give the identity back.
