Sentential Complexity in the Introductions of Linguistics Research Articles in English

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasi tipe-tipe kalimat yang digunakan dalam pendahuluan-pendahuluan artikel penelitian yang berkaitan dengan linguistik yang diambil dari International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature (IJALEL) dan juga untuk mengetahui tipe kalimat yang sering digunakan dalam pendahuluan-pendahuluan tersebut. Berdasarkan tingkat kompleksitas, kalimat-kalimat tersebut diklasifikasikan ke dalam empat tipe yakni kalimat sederhana, kalimat majemuk, kalimat kompleks, dan kalimat majemuk-kompleks (Verspoor dan Sauter 35). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa seluruh tipe kalimat ini digunakan dalam pendahuluan-pendahuluan artikel yang dipilih tersebut. Namun demikian, dibandingkan dengan tipe-tipe kalimat yang lain, kalimat kompleks adalah tipe kalimat yang sering digunakan di sana yang memiliki jumlah yakni 155 (54.58%).

The aims of the research are to identify and classify sentence types used in the linguistic research article introductions taken from International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature (IJALEL) and also to find out the most frequently used sentence type in the introductions. Based on degrees of complexity, the sentences are classified into four types namely simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound-complex sentence (Verspoor and Sauter 35). The result of analysis shows that all of these sentence types are used in the selected research article introductions. However, in comparison to the other sentence types, complex sentence is the most frequently used sentence type there whose quantity is 155 (54.58%).
