THE DIASPORIC IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF KOREAN AMERICAN SECOND GENERATION AS DEPICTED IN CHANG RAE LEE'S NATIVE SPEAKER

Tesis ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana generasi kedua Korea Amerika membentuk identitas diaspora mereka di masyarakat Amerika dan juga untuk menjejahi konstruksi identitas diaspora sebagai hasil dari pengalaman generasi kedua Korea Amerika seperti yang direfleksikan dalam novel karya Chang Rae Lee yg berjudul Native Speaker. Kajian postcolonial diterapkan dalam tesis ini untuk menganalisa relasi antara masyarakat yg dominan dan masyarakat minoritas Korea Amerika yang kemudian juga mempengaruhi konstruksi identitas generasi kedua immigrant tersebut. Penelitian menggunakan teori hibriditas dari Homi Bhabha dan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian tesis menunjukan bahwa identitas diaspora dari generasi kedua Korea Amerika ini dibentuk melalui negosiasi identitas. Teori hybridity yang dikemukakan oleh Bhabha diterapkan untuk mengkaji bagaimana generasi kedua Korea Amerika hidup dan berusaha ditengah kebimbangan antara dua dunia, yaitu budaya asli mereka dan budaya Amerika yang mereka adopsi, sebelum pada akhirnya mereka bisa menemukan konstruksi identitas diaspora hybrid untuk bisa menjadi orang Korea sekaligus menjadi orang Amerika

This thesis aims to analyze how second generations of Korean American construct their diasporic identity in American society and also to explore the construction of diasporic identity as a result of Korean American experiences as portrayed in Chang Rae Lee's novel entitled Native Speaker. Postcolonial study is applied in this thesis to analyze the relation between the dominant society and the minority Korean American which impacted to the identity construction of the second generation immigrants. The study uses Homi Bhabha�s theory of hybridity and qualitative methods. The findings of the thesis show that the diasporic identity of the second generation of Korean American is constructed through the negotiation of identity. Bhabha�s theory of hybridity is applied in order to categorize the process on how the Korean Americans live and struggle in the ambivalence of the two worlds which are between their culture of origin and their adopted American culture before they can finally manage to construct a hybrid diasporic identity to become both Korean and American.
