This research discusses the direct physical appropriation towards women in the novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The objectives of this study are to identify the forms of the appropriation as well as to find out the effects towards Celie, the protagonist, as an individual. This research applies the French materialist feminist approach, specifically the theories proposed by Colette Guillaumin. The types of direct physical appropriation suggested by Guillaumin are: the appropriation of women’s time, the appropriation of the product of women’s body, the sexual obligation of women, and the physical charge of disabled members of the group. Based on the analysis, this research finds that Celie is appropriated by having to do house chores on top of her job in the cotton field, Celie is denied of her rights to raise her children, Celie becomes the victim of unconsented sexual acts both by her stepfather and in marriage by her husband, and Celie constantly has to take care of the ills. The appropriation results in Celie’s deprivation of individuality, lack of self-worth, and inability to find time for herself. Despite the prior obstacles Celie succeeds in regaining the power to free herself from the oppression.
