The Role of Ideology in Shaping the Public's Perspective in a Society as seen in George Orwell's 1984

Ideologi adalah sebuah alat yang mempunyai kekuatan untuk membentuk perspektif dari seorang individu ataupun sebuah masyarakat. Ideologi juga dapat menghasilkan sebuah kesadaran palsu dalam seorang individu ataupun sebuah masyarakat tentang realita kehidupan untuk membenarkan penindasan dan ketidakadilan oleh kelompok penguasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari dan mendeskripsikan bagaimana Inner Party, sebagai kelompok penguasa dalam Nineteen Eighty-Four karya George Orwell, mengendalikan masyarakat dengan menggunakan ideology untuk menghasilkan kesadaran palsu dalam masyarkat. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan mempelajari INGSOC sebagai satu-satunya partai politik di Oceania. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Marxist khususnya Kesadaran Palsu dan Ideologi dalam Teori Marxist oleh Ron Eyerman. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah masyarkat dan pemerintah yang dipaparkan dalam novel ini. Data yang dikumpulkan kemudian dianalisa untuk mempelajari ideologi yang digunakan oleh kelompok penguasa dan untuk membuktikan bahwa hal itu digunakan untuk menghasilkan kesadaran palsu di masyarakat Nineteen Eighty-Four. Hasil dari penelitian ini berhasil mengidentifikasi ideologi dari kelompok penguasa dan juga menemukan bukti-bukti yang diperlukan bahwa ideologi tersebut digunakan untuk menghasilkan kesadaran palsu dalam masyarakat agar dapat mengendalikan mereka.

Ideology is a tool which has the power to shape the perspective of an individual or a society. Ideology is also capable to produce a false consciousness in an individual or a society about the reality of life to justify the oppression and injustice by the ruling class. This research aims to study and describe how the Inner Party, as the ruling class in George Orwell Nineteen Eighty-Four, controls the society by using ideology to produce false consciousness in the society. Furthermore, this research also aims to study INGSOC as the only political party of Oceania. The theory that is used in this research is Marxist especially False Consciousness and Ideology in Marxist Theory by Ron Eyerman. The data used in this research are the society and the government depicted in the novel. The collected data are then analyzed to study the ideology of the ruling class and to prove that it is being used to produce false consciousness in the society of Nineteen Eighty-Four. The result of this research manages to identify the ideology of the ruling class and also find the necessary evidence that the ideology is being used to produce false consciousness in the society to keep them in control.
