This study aimed to investigate the existence of a positive relationship between health self-efficacy and health-related quality of life in smoking, ex-smoking, and non-smoking adolescents. The participants were 279 university students from various universities, with mean age 20 years old. This study used SF-36 to measure health-related quality of life, and health self-efficacy was measured using Perceived Health Competence Scale. Pearson analysis indicated a significant positive relationship between the two variables (r = .61, p < .01). ANOVA analysis followed by contrast test showed no difference in their health-related quality of life (F = .691, p > .05). However, a significant difference was found in their health self-efficacy (F = 3.576, p < .05), in which ex-smokers were found to possess significantly higher health self-efficacy compared to smokers (t = -2.645, p < .05). The results suggested different dynamics of health-related quality of life and health self-efficacy relationship in smokers, ex-smokers, and non-smokers.
