ORIENTATION AND ATTRIBUTION TOWARD HAPPINESS AND ANGER
NIKEN RARASATI,
2014 | Skripsi |Preliminary research on Indonesian and German students’ perception of emotion showed that there were different ways on expressing the causes of happiness and anger between the cultures. Indonesians perceive object that make them happy and their relation with the object in holistic perception, while Germans seperates the object and the relationship. The researcher assumed that there might be a different attribution (Keley & Michela, 1980) and orientation (Dweck, Chui, & Hong, 1995) behind their perception of emotion. This study aimed to explore the happy and angry moments experienced by Indonesian students deeper and to understand the attribution and orientation pattern behind the participants’ perception. Three levels of analysis were included on this qualitative study, such as; (1) exploration of the theme using coding analysis, (2) revealation of the attribution and orientation pattern using protocol analysis, and (3) understanding the orientation and attribution using socio-syntactic analysis. It was found that relationship is an important factor of happiness and anger for the students. The depth of the relationship gives an effect to participants’ cognitive perception towards their emotional experience (orientation and attribution. This study can also reveal the fact that God’s blessing is the source of the ultimate happiness or the entity of happiness. Keywords: attribution, orientation, happiness, anger, Indonesian students
