The current study attempts at discovering the relationship between self-image and how it affects tendencies of conforming to or resisting against pressures derived from peers. Subjects of the study incorporate students from grades 7 – 10 (junior and senior high school) as well as first-semester university undergraduates; or an age range of approximately 12 – 21. Results of the study shows a significant negative correlation between self-image and conformity; indicating the higher one’s self-image, the lower will be his tendencies of conforming to peer groups, and vice-versa. Analyses also conclude no significant difference in self-image between male and female subjects, but male subjects had higher levels of conformity than females. An inverted-U relation was found between conformity and age, with levels of conformity reaching its highest during mid-adolescence, and a curvilinear relation was also found between self-image and age, where self-image was found to decrease during early adolescence before increasing toward late adolescence.
