PENGALAMAN SUBJEKTIF PASIEN PENDERITA FILARIASIS LIMFATIK DI BELITUNG

Lymphatic filariasis disease known as elephantiasis, is a contagious disease caused by a worm filarial (W.Brancrofti, W.malayi, dan B.timori) and is transmitted through mosquito bites. Although this disease is not fatal but causes permanent disability in the long term, resulting in lower productivity of sufferers, social stigma, economic losses, and so on. This study aims to understand the subjective experience of patients with lymphatic filariasis. Researchers using qualitative research methods with phenomenological approach to uncover the subjective experience of patients with lymphatic filariasis. The study involved 5 people with elephantiasis/lymphodema and hydrocele from 5 villages in East Belitung regency. Explored participants’ subjective experience of using in-depth interviews and field notes. The result showed that patients living in poverty with low education levels. This condition makes the patient’s ability to prevent or overcome disease and treatment is limited, so they have a permanent disability and productivity in the work to be distrupted. In addition, symptom of physical symptoms which cause unpleasant subjective distress. The stigma attached to the patient caused social isolation and emotional distress. Marriage and relationship with parents become worse. This situation makes people who don’t have the coping and social support are well experienced in the fall and pessimistic about his future. Filariasis patients who otherwise have the coping and social support is good, able to understand the disease as a significant event and bring the good in life. The study also found concept of the Belitung community causes lymphatic filariasis is a curse and things that smelled of mystical. Perceptions and beliefs of the community to support the emergence of filariasis causes of stigma in people with filariasis.
