TRADISI BELIS DALAM PERKAWINAN SUKU DAWAN (STUDI DINAMIKA PSIKOLOGIS BAGI PEREMPUAN YANG SUDAH MENI

This qualitative study is conducted by using phenomenological approach aimed to examine the meaning of the tradition of belis within the marriage in Dawan tribe, as well as to examine the psychological dynamics experienced by married woman. This study applies participative observation and in-depth interview to gain information from 7 respondents. In conducting phenomenological qualitative study, there are 4 phases to take, which includes epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis of meaning and essence. The result reveals that the tradition of belis has the meaning of being the symbol of appreciation towards woman, symbol of familial bond, symbol of a woman entering her husband’s clan, the commitment of living together as husband and wife, respects between the spouse and their family, symbol of the bride’s appreciation to her mother, symbol of social status of the married couple and their family, as well as a cultural duty in Dawan tribe. Whenever belis is practiced right, it brings positive influence to the married woman as it may help the newly married woman to feel comfortable, peaceful, and happy in living her marriage. On the other hand, belis may also bring negative effect if it is too costly and is given only to achieve personal profit. It may cause the newly married woman to feel afraid, anxious. depressed, and unhappy in her marriage. Keywords: belis, marriage, psychological dynamics, married woman
