PENGARUH METODE PEMBELAJARAN JOLLY PHONICS TERHADAP KEMAMPUAN BACA-TULIS PERMULAAN BAHASA INDONES

Reading and writing along with math, are the most important skills for children to be mastered in the beginning school year so they will be able to study properly. Reading and writing skills affect children academic performance at school, because they are tools to gain information and knowledge. Moreever, in globalization era English is very important that need to be taught as early as possible. Therefore, it’s necessary to learn basic literacy both in Indonesian and in English. Jolly Phonics method application makes it possible to do so. This method teaches children basic literacy abilities such as recognizing letter sounds, blending words, and also English vocabulary and how to read them. This study compared the Indonesian and English initial literacy abilities of children who leart them in Jolly Phonics method and children who learnt them in regular method. There were 60 children who are divided into control group and experiment group, each group consisted of 30 children. The modification of Early Reading Screening Instrument (ERSI; Morris, 2000) was used to measure literacy abilities. Measurement took place before and after literacy learning process. Then the gain scores were analyzed by t test. The results showed that t = -2,511 with p= 0,015. These findings proved that the Indonesian and English literacy abilities of control group and experiment group were significantly difference. The children who learnt in Jolly Phonics method had greater ability than children who learnt in regular method. Key words: reading, writing, jolly phonics method, preschool children
