Communication is a crucial element in nursing. Emotional intelligence is one a determinant factor for communication success. This study is an action research which aims to correct therapeutic communication ability of nursing students through training program of emotional intelligence. Subject of this study is one class of 3rd semester students in Pemda Kapuas Nursing Academy comprising of 50 students (32 female and 18 male) which were given training of emotional intelligence for three days. The training was given through speech, discussion, story telling, watching movies, games, and role play. Measurement of dependent variable was done by therapeutic communication to the subject with real patient in which took place before and after training in RSUD dr. H. Soemarno Sosroatmodjo of Kuala Kapuas. This study held from September 2nd to October 12th 2007. Data was collected through training evaluation sheet from the subject and observer, observational sheet of therapeutic communication from clinical instructor and reflection with the subject in the end of study. Data analysis using t-test suggests an increase on average score of therapeutic communication from 77.72 into 104.44. Using pair sample test, there was found a very significant difference with t-statistics of 6.820 ; probability of alpha error (p) t-table (2.01), as well as probability of alpha error (p)
