This study aims at exposing the relative deprivation and alienation experienced by farmers under the free trade regime. It was done through four processes, i.e. epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation and synthesis of meaning. In-depth interviews were carried out to 14 farmers in the Districts of Sleman (DIY), Wonosobo and Temanggung (Central Java), recorded and transcribed verbatim, and analyzed. Informants were selected with theoretical sampling. Inter-interpreter discussions and inter-subjective validity technique were used for data verification. Research findings demonstrate that rising production costs in agriculture and decreasing income amidst mounting living costs have put considerable pressures on farmers’ life. Economic difficulties, life pressures and various tensions generate feelings of social marginalization that in turn lead to deprivation. Meanwhile, the feelings of hopelessness in the face of life hardships lead farmers to alienation. Key words: Phenomenology, Farmers, Free Trade, Relative Deprivation, Alienation
