“SHARING CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE”: ADAPTATIVE BEHAVIOR IN INTERCULTURAL WORK-GROUPS Fransisca Aprianti Dwi Setiyowati1 and Fathul Himam2 PROGRAM STUDI PSIKOLOGI SEKOLAH PASCASARJANA UNIVERSITAS GADJAH MADA ABSTRACT The aim of grounded theory research in this industrial and organizational psychology was to understand the process and adaptation strategy carried out by Indonesian employees working in Korean companies. It was intended to develop new understanding about the behavioral dynamic of employees working in international context. The data collected consists of both primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected by using depth interview, while secondary data was collected through observation and documentation. Chosen purposefully 10 participant were involved in this study. The participants were Indonesian who had minimal two years experiences working in Korean companies. Also, they had high intensity and frequency in communication with Korean. Data gathered were analyzed based on grounded theory approach: open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The results showed that the adaptative behavio r of Indonesian working in Korean companies was characterized by one major theme that is sharing cultural knowledge. However this type of behavior only occurred among employees with good personality and good communication skills. Personality itself consisted of: cultural empathy, open mindedness, flexibility, social initiative and emotional stability. Good communication skills was reflected by the ability to speak a foreign language fluently, at least English. Through sharing cultural knowledge every employee would be able to exchange information and experiences which would increase insight each others. In such a way, when an employee could adapt well, he or she would feel comfortable and feel at home during their working hours. This matter would naturally have positive effects on the work performance of each employee. Keywords: adaptative behavior, intercultural work-groups, sharing cultural knowledge
