The research aimed to gain a picture about the characteristics of questions for university admittance test at Muhammadiyah University of Malang academic year 2004/2005 based on modern and classic test theories. Through examination, both tests will be known their accuracies. Subjects of research were freshmen of Muhammadiyah University of Malang admitted in 2004 consisting of 600 male and 600 female. The object of research was subjects’ responses on the questions presented in the university admittance test for Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Results of data analysis using classic test theory showed that level of difficulty varied, that is 29.3% (22 items) was hard, 24% (18 items) was moderate, and 46.7% (35 items) were easy. Discriminating elements were highted 62.7% (47 item), moderate (21.3% (16 items), and low 16% (12 items). The effectiveness of distractor functioned properly 45/3% (34 items), needed revisions 38.7% (29 items) and did not function 16% (12 items). Under modern test theory, the results showed the following respectively: conformity between data and logistic 3 parameter model revealed that 72% (52 items) fitted in with the model while 28% (21 items) were considered not matched. Discriminating elements were higted 34.7% (26 items), moderate 43.7% (32 items) and low 22.7% (17 items). Level of difficulty was moderate 54.7% (41 items) and high 45.3% (34 items). Probability of guessing was accepted 97.3% (73 items) and rejected 2.7% (2 items) Results of analysis on the selection tools showed that the standard error measurement (SEM) was 3,602 while Alpha reliability index was 0.778. It indicated that results of measurement using selection tests conducted exhibited stabilities in revealing the ability of prospective students who took the test.
