Background music at work is viewed as an important background feature in effecting employee work motivation, job satisfaction, and work productivity. In this study, an experimental design (randomized control-group pretest-posttest design) was used to examine the effect of background music at work to the employee work motivation, job satisfaction, and work productivity of animal and plant quarantine agency, Tanjung Emas Semarang. The primary aim of the study was to know the difference in work motivation, job satisfaction, and work productivity between employees when they were working, with and without music. Sixty-five employees of animal quarantine agency and sixty- five employees of plant quarantine agency were involved in this study, acquired by random sampling technique. The data were gathered by means of three questionnaires and analyzed by ANOVA (one-way mix one- factor). For three weeks, two conditions were applied in this study, i.e. condition with music (instrumental pop music) in plant quarantine agency and condition without music in animal quarantine agency. ANOVA demontrated a very significant positive effect of background music at work to the employee work motivation, job satisfaction, and work productivity. Mean of work motivation, job satisfaction, and work productivity (posttest) in experimental group was higher than mean of work motivation, job satisfaction, and work productivity (posttest) in control group.
