This phenomenology qualitative research was conducted in order to know the meaning of ‘career’ for working woman. This research attempted to explain the meaning of ‘career’ from woman’s or mother’s point of view as the individual with the attributes as a mother. Mother in dual-career family obviously has double roles; being a mother and a worker. Therefore, by understanding the meaning of ‘career’ for working mother, it would be easier to describe the phenomenon of women especially the mothers who should manage double responsibilities and roles i.e dilemma between family interest or career. This research used in-dept interview for collecting data. 12 respondents were involved. Respondents were pool by using ‘snow-ball’ technique and were chosen by theoretical sampling. In phenomenology qualitative research, there were four (4) processes taken: epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthetics of meaning. The process of analyzing and interpreting data included bracketing, horizonalizing, meaning units to gain textural description, imaginative variation was used to gain structural description, and combine textural description with structural description turned into the meaning which was universal and representative to respondents in a whole. The validity of research result used intersubjective validity. This study revealed that for mothers, career was considered as self-actualization to strengthen their existence. The existence of role model, husband’s permission, children’s condition, their potential and their willingness to increase family welfare and also the opportunity to step up to higher position in company, made working mothers feel to stay in line (working) but on the other side they still maintain their role as mothers (and wives). Keywords: mother, career, dual-career family, self-actualization.
