Monique Elizabeth Sukamto,
2005 | Tesis |Adolescent girls commonly show body image dissatisfaction. Adolescent girls who have body image dissatisfaction are not restricted to girls who have too fat or too thin bodies, but also girls whose body weight are considered ideal according to Body Mass Index (BMI). Whereas, some studies indicated that body image dissatisfaction could lead to more serious problems, such as unhealthy diet, eating disorders, smoking behaviour, low self-esteem, and depression. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of bibliotherapy, which divided into interactive bibliotherapy and reading bibliotherapy, in reducing body image dissatisfaction among high school girls. Participants were 45 high school girls from three different high schools, whose Body Mass Index were normal (18.5 – 22.9) and experienced moderate to very high body image dissatisfaction. Participants from each high school were assigned to one of three conditions: interactive bibliotherapy as experimental condition 1, reading bibliotherapy as experimental condition 2, or as waiting- list control group. Interactive bibliotherapy and reading bibliotherapy consisted of 4 sessions, conducted once a week for 4 weeks. Body image dissatisfaction of each participant was measured at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 1-month follow- up. This study based on Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. To analyze the data, the experimenter used One-Way ANOVA and General Linear Model – Univariate from SPSS 12.0 for Windows. The result from this study indicated that interactive bibliotherapy and reading bibliotherapy had a relatively equal effect in reducing body image dissatisfaction among high school girls. It means that bibliotherapist can choose which schools of thought of bibliotherapy to be used according to the availability of time and place. The effectiveness of interactive bibliotherapy and reading bibliotherapy were maintained until 1-month follow-up. The participants were recommended to keep trying to discover their inner potentials, such as talents and abilities, so that they are not preoccupied to their physical appearance. In addition, it is necessary for them to revise their booklet or read other books about selfimprovement and health to improve their self and body satisfaction.
