PENANGANAN KEMARAHAN PADA SITUASI KONFLIK DALAM KELUARGA BATAK
IRNA MINAULI,
2004 | Tesis |Cross-cultural studies on handling-anger usually used Java as representatives of Indonesia. In fact, Indonesia is a big country with diverse cultures. One of them is Batak. They are known as spontaneous and expressive people in handling their anger. Although within that tribes there are some differentiations too, especially between Mandailing-Angkola and Toba. The aims of this study are to know (1) differences on handling-anger pattern within Mandailing-Angkola’s and Toba’s (2) sources of conflict within family (3) what are they doing and what are they thinking about anger-instigator, especially if the anger-instigator is father, mother, and siblings (older sister, older brother, younger sister, and younger brother) (4) their knowledge about Batak’s values (5) and to evaluate Weber’s vignette which modified by Dahme (1999). This study is a qualitative study, using Focus Group Discussion to explore the problems those are not well known before, especially in literatures. The subjects were 12 Mandailing-Angkola’s and 8 Toba’s undergraduate male students in Medan. The results show those (1) handling-anger within Mandailing-Angkola is more peaceful than Toba’s (2) handling-anger to mother as anger-instigator is more peaceful compared with father and siblings (3) what are they thinking is more peaceful than what are they doing (4) siblings rivalry is more often between their brothers, especially with their younger brother (5) they have the same sources of conflict and handling-anger pattern between mother and older sister (6) the understanding of cultural values tend to decrease within Batak’s young generation (7) they tend not to married with their own pariban (8) in Batak Toba they still keep the belief not to marry people from the same marga while in Mandailing-Angkola they can receive this (9) the vignette about concert and make their own present are two conditions that they never been experienced before, that need to be reevaluated. Key words: Mandailing-Angkola, Toba, handling-anger pattern, anger-instigator, Focus Group Discussion, marga, pariban. e-mail address: irna_minauli@yahoo.com
