The synthesis of the composite chitosan-PVA-TiO2-Ag as an antibacterial film had been done. The composites were synthesized by mixing chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution, further the solution was added with TiO2-Ag powder which was synthesized previously by reacting AgNO3 and TiO2 under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. In this research, the effect of the weight of PVA and TiO2-Ag on the mechanical and antibacterial properties of the composites was investigated. Escherichia Coli was used for antibacterial test. The composite chitosan-PVA-TiO2-Ag with raw materials, among others chitosan, PVA and TiO2-Ag had characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) to identify functional groups. Characterization with x-ray diffraction (XRD) was used on TiO2 and TiO2-Ag to identify material’s crystallinity. Characterization with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was performed to confirm the existence of Ag in the composite. The results showed that increasing PVA’s weight increased the elongation of the composite, and slightly decreased the tensile strength of the composite. The increasing of TiO2-Ag’s weight in composite increased the mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation) of the composite. Antibacterial activity test results showed that the chitosan-PVA-TiO2-Ag composite film have good antibacterial properties. Increasing weight of chitosan enhanced the composite antibacterial activity. Enhancement of TiO2-Ag content of the composite, however, slightly lower the antibacterial activity of the composite.
