2016 | Skripsi | FMIPASynthesis of chitosan-TiO2-Ag composite has been carried out. The composite was synthesized by mixing chitosan solution and TiO2-Ag powders. Chitosan concentration was used as the variable for studying mechanical and antibacterial properties of the composite. The synthesis of chitosan-TiO2-Ag was conducted in three steps, i.e. preparation of chitosan solution, TiO2-Ag synthesis, and chitosan-TiO2-Ag synthesis. Chitosan was prepared by mixing chitosan of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 g with 100 mL of 1% acetic acid solvent (v/v). The composite was characterized using infrared spectrophotometry and X-ray diffraction methods, while the TiO2-Ag were characterized using diffuse reflectance spectrophotomety, transmission electron microscopy, mechanical properties test such as tensile strength and elongation were performed using universal testing machine, and antibacterial property test was performed using plate count method. Characterization results of FTIR and XRD showed that chitosan-TiO2-Ag composite was successfully synthesized. The TiO2-Ag was responsive toward UV and visible lights with the absorption peaks of diffuse reflectance UV-Visible spectra at 450-600 nm. TEM characterization showed that the morphology of TiO2-Ag consist of 7-10 nm silver particle dispersed on TiO2 surface. Result from mechanical properties test showed that the 3.0% (w/v) chitosan concentration in composite increased the tensile strength up to 41.40 MPa and increased elongation up to 2.92%. The result of antimicrobial property showed that 3.0% (w/v) chitosan concentration in composite was able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli up to 7.6×106 CFU/g for 24 h contact time. These results showed that the chitosan-TiO2-Ag was an effective antibacterial agent.
