Adsorption of benzene and toluene by using N-cethyl-N,N,Ntrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant modified bentonite with twice CEC concentration has been done. This research was conducted to study the resulted adsorption capacity of natural bentonite (BA), activated natural bentonite (BAA) and CTAB modified bentonite or surfactant modified bentonite (SMB) which had been obtained from previous research (Argawati, Suraiya and Utami, 2014). The adsorbents were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer, while the adsorption result was measured by UV spectrophotometer. X-ray diffraction pattern showed that montmorillonite as the major mineral was damaged because of storage factor and age of bentonite. Adsorption of benzene and toluene on SMB followed Freundlich adsorption isotherm model with adsorption capacity for benzene was 1.7x10-3 mol/g and toluene was 1.8x10-3 mol/g. The adsorption capacity for benzene and toluene was SMB > BAA > BA.
