PEMBUATAN KATALIS Co/KARBON AKTIF DAN APLIKASINYA DALAM REAKSI DEHIDRASI ETANOL MENJADI 1,1-DIETOKSIETANA; PREPARATION OF Co/ACTIVATED CARBON CATALYST AND ITS APPLICATION IN ETHANOL DEHYDRATION REACTION TO PRODUCE 1,1-DIETHOXYETHANE

Preparation of a cobalt catalyst supported on coconut shell activated carbon (Co/AC) for ethanol dehydration conversion to produce acetal compund of 1,1-diethoxyethane has been investigated. Activated carbon was prepared by grinding the coconut shell carbon to 60-80 mesh, then it was activated at 800 ?C for about 4 hours using CO2 gas at flow rate of 20 mL/minute. Then, activated carbon was washed by acetone and HCl 1.0 M solution, and dried. Furthermore, the activated carbon was impregnated with Co(NO3)2 1% and reduced at 450 ?C for about 4 hours using H2 gas at flow rate of 10 mL/minute. The contents of K, Fe, and Ca metals in the carbon were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) method. Characterization of catalyst was conducted to determine the acidity of activated carbon and Co/AC catalyst by gravimetric method using ammonia adsorption. The process of ethanol dehydration using Co/AC catalyst was carried out in an electric furnace by varying the temperature of 300, 350, 400, 450, and 500 ?C, and by varying the amount of catalyst of 10, 15, and 20 g, using H2 gas at flow rate of 20 mL/minute. Products of dehydration were analyzed by GC, GC-MS, FTIR, and NMR methods. Results of analyses showed that soaking into acetone and HCl 1.0 M solution, caused the content of K, Fe, and Ca metals in activated carbon decreased significantly. Results of ammonia adsorption showed that the acidity of activated carbon and Co/AC catalyst were 2.674 and 7.843 mmol/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the highest catalytic activity achieved at temperature 500 ?C by using 20 g catalyst, be able to produce 10.50% 1,1-diethoxyethane.
