A research on characterization of polyvinil alcohol (PVA) nanofiber membrane as smoke filter has been conducted. The characterization was applied by producing PVA 15wt% nanofiber membrane with electrospinning method. In this research, the PVA nanofiber membrane is used to filter cigarette, styrofoam and vehicle smoke. SEM result identified significant difference between before and after PVA membran used as smoke filter. After PVA membrane filtration, smoke particle has been adsorbed on membrane pore and adhered on fiber surface of PVA membrane. The size of adsorbed and adhered particle is 10 nm – 0.5 ?m. FTIR spectrum reveals the change on both intensity and peak of adsorbance, such as Si- O stretching (1026 cm-1), C-N stretching (1245 cm-1), N=O bending (1373 cm-1), N-H bending (1373 cm-1) dan C=N stretching (1643 cm-1). Moreover, XRF spectrum of PVA membrane (after used as cigarette smoke filter) identify another elements such as Si (Silicon) and Sc (Scandium). Gas sensor array response confirms that the using of two PVA membrane has a better filtration efficiency than one PVA membrane. This phenomnenon is showed by gas sensor TGS813, TGS2611 and TGS2612 with 76%, 83% and 94% filtration efficiency.
