UPAYA PENURUNAN KANDUNGAN COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) LIMBAH CAIR INDUSTRI MIE SOUN HINGGA MEMENUHI BAKU MUTU MENGGUNAKAN METODE FOTODEGRADASI TERKATALISIS TiO2 DENGAN ADANYA H2O2; AN EFFORT TO DECREASE OF COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) LEVEL OF CELLOPHANE NOODLES INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER BY PHOTODEGRADATION UNDER CATALYSIS OF TiO2 AND IN THE PRESENCE OF H2O2

In order to examine the application of the photocatalytic degradation process for the wastewater treatment, in this research the influence of H2O2 addition into the UV/TiO2 system and optimization of the process variables to decrease the COD level of cellophane noodles industrial wastewater, have been studied. The influence of H2O2 on the effectiveness of COD level decreasing was assessed by applying UV/TiO2 and UV/TiO2/H2O2 systems to the wastewater. The process variables of UV/TiO2/H2O2 system were optimized by varying the pH, mass of TiO2 photocatalyst, irradiation time, and H2O2 concentration. The photocatalytic effectiveness was represented as a decrease of COD level. The COD level analysis was performed by volumetric method. In addition, characterization by using IR spectrophotometry to find out the fuctional groups of organic compounds in the wastewater, before and after photodegradation, was conducted. In this research, photodegradation was also performed in several stages to achieve the quality standard for cellophane noodles industrial wastewater determined by Central Java Government, i.e. 250 mg L?1. The results show that the cellophane noodles industrial wastewater has COD level that exceeds the quality standard, i.e. 1920 mg L?1. Photocatalytic degradation over TiO2 could decrease the COD level to 1480 mg L?1 (22.92%), and addition of H2O2 to the system could improve the decreasing effectiveness up to 1120 mg L?1 (41.67%). The maximum COD level decreasing was achieved by using 10 mg TiO2, UV irradiation over 24 h,with the addition of H2O2 10 mM, and pH 3. But this COD level has not fulfilled the quality standard. The decreasing COD level that fulfills the quality standard could be achieved after 4 stages of photodegradation, with the final COD value was 203 mg L?1.
