The nanofibers membrane of PVA/Chitosan (CS) have been successfully carried out by electrospinning method. In this study, Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) Guzenol (MW ± 30.000) 20% with Chitosan (CS) industrial grade DDA = 80-84% in acetic acid 2% solution was used for the electrospinning process. To get the best fibers morphology, the concentration of Chitosan was varied (3 wt%, 4 wt%, 5 wt% and 6 wt%). The ratio of PVA/CS was set at 50:50 and 70:30. The electrospinning process conducted with electric field 15 kV, distance tip to collector 12 cm and diameter of needle 0,6 mm. Then, electrospun nanofiber was heated at temperature of 135 ºC for 2 hours. After heat treatment, there was decrease in the diameter of nanofiber PVA/CS membrane. The average diameter of nanofiber PVA/CS 50:50 before heat treatment is (210 ± 40) nm and PVA/CS 70:30 is (500 ± 100). After heat treatment, the average diameter of nanofiber PVA/CS 50:50 became (140 ± 20) nm and PVA/CS is 70:30 (400 ± 100) nm. As the result of X-ray diffraction (XRD) it is shown that the nanofiber PVA/CS 70:30 has high degree of crystallinity. The result of infrared spectra shown that there is no significant changes in the rate of infrared absorption at each concentration both before and after heat tretment. Antibacterial test using E. coli bacterial shown that the membrane PVA/CS has weak antibacterial characteristic, but has barrier characteristic that make bacterial can not live.
