PEMBUATAN DAN KARAKTERISASI KRIM KOSMETIK DENGAN BAHAN BAKU MINYAK KELAPA DAN ARANG TEMPURUNG KELAPA; PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COSMETIC CREAM USING COCONUT OIL AND COCONUT SHELL CHARCOAL AS RAW MATERIAL

The purpose of this research was to prepare and characterize a sunscreen and moisturizer cosmetic cream using coconut oil as raw material and a scrub cosmetic cream using coconut oil and coconut shell charcoal as raw materials. Cosmetic cream as a sunscreen and moisturizer was prepared by emulsifying the water phase (glycerin, triethanolamine (TEA) and aquadest) and oil phase (coconut oil, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol and lanolin). To determine the effect of the concentration of stearic acid, TEA and coconut oil on the properties of the cream (pH, viscosity and droplet size), these ingredients were added in various concentrations. The sunscreen activity of cream was determined by measuring the absorption of UV radiation of cream solution. The absorbance values resulted were used to calculate the value of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) by using Petro’s equation. To increase the effectiveness of a sunscreen cream, it was added an organic sunscreen (benzophenone-3), inorganic sunscreen (TiO2), a mixture of both. Moisturizer activity of cream was determined by measuring the vapor pressure of cream solution using a tool that was equipped with a mercury manometer in a closed and open manner. Manufacture of cream with raw materials of coconut oil and coconut shell charcoal as a scrub was made with similar procedure as preparation of sunscreen and moisturizer, but it was added coconut shell charcoal. Determination of the cream activity as a scrub was conducted by qualitative and quantitative test. The results show, the concentration of triethanolamine (TEA), stearic acid and coconut oil affect the properties of cosmetic cream. The cream made of coconut oil absorbs the UV C radiation. The concentration of TiO2, benzophenone-3 and a mixture of both affect the intensity of UV radiation absorption, SPF and effectiveness of sunscreen creams. Solution of coconut oil cream can reduce the vapor pressure of the solution, therefore the cream with coconut oil as raw materials can serve as moisturizer. Cosmetic cream made of coconut oil and coconut shell charcoal can clean the dirt and grease on the surface of the skin, so these cream can serve as a cleanser and scrub.
