2015 | Skripsi | FMIPAPreparation of Co catalyst supported on activated carbon and the use for conversion of n-pentanol into acetal has been conducted. The catalyst was prepared by the method of activating 60-80 mesh carbon from the coconut shells, then heated at temperature of 800 °C, washed with acetone, distilled water, and HCl 1 M, then dried. Co impregnation on activated carbon was done using Co (NH3)2.6H2O, and it was reduced at temperature of 425 °C using hydrogen gas. Metal content of Fe in carbon was determined by using AAS, while Ca and K in carbon was determined using ICP. The acidity of activated carbon and the catalyst determined by adsorption of ammonia. n-Pentanol dehydration processes using Co/activated carbon catalysts were carried out in an electric furnace at temperature variation of 300, 350, 400, 450, 500 °C and variation of the catalyst amount of 10, 15, 20 g, using H2 as carrier gas with flow rate of 8-10 mL/minute. Products of the dehydration were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Results of AAS and ICP analysis showed that the metal content of Fe, Ca, and K in the activated carbon decreased after washing using acetone, distilled water, and HCl 1 M. Ammonia adsorption results indicated acidity of activated carbon and the Co/activated carbon catalyst were 5,66 mmol/g and 9,72 mmol/g, respectively of the highest activity of Co/activated carbon reached at the temperature of 500 °C in the amount of Co catalyst/activated carbon catalyst of 10 g, which produced of acetal as much as 50.47%.
