The research on study of simultaneous adsorpstion of Pb(II)and Cd(II) metal ions on dithizone-immobilized coal-bottom ash has been conducted. The research was started by analyzing metal oxides of coal bottom ash from PLTU Pacitan by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Coal bottom ash was activated by using HCl solution, and then dithizone was immobilized on the surface of coal bottom ash. Non immobilized and dithizone-immobilized coal bottom ash were characterized using Infra Red Spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction analysis. The adsorption study of metal ions includes the parameters influencing metal adsorption e.g. pH solution, mass of adsorbent, contact time, and initial concentration of Pb(II) metal ion in the presence of fixed concentration of Cd(II). The result of characterization using Infra Red Spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction method indicates that dithizone has been successfully immobilized on the surface of activated coal bottom ash. The adsorption study suggests that the optimum conditions for metal adsorption are pH of the solution 5, mass of the adsorbent of 0.05 and 0.1 gram for Pb(II) and Cd(II) metal ions adsorption, respectively. The adsorption of non immobilized and dithizone-immobilized coal bottom ash adsorbents reach its optimum condition at 40 and 30 minutes for adsorption of Pb(II) metal ion, and at 60 and 40 minutes for Cd(II) metal ion, respectively. Adsorption follows pseudo-second order kinetic model for all metals on both adsorbents with the adsorption rate constant for Pb(II) of 0.12 and 1.02 g mg-1 min-1 and Cd(II) of 0.61 and 0.16 g mg-1 min-1. Maximum adsorption for Pb(II) metal ion in the presence of fixed concentration of Cd(II) was obtained at concentration of 80 and 40 ppm for non immobilized and dithizone-immobilized coal bottom ash adsorbents, respectively. The adsorption follows Langmuir isotherm model with the equilibrium constant of 2.40×104 and 1.37×105 L mol-1, and adsorption energy of 24.99 and 29.30 kJ mol-1 for non immobilized and dithizon-immobilized coal-bottom ash, respectively.
