SINTESIS POLI TRIMETILEN TEREFTALAT DARI GLISEROL MINYAK SAWIT; SYNTHESIS OF POLY TRIMETHYLENE TEREPHTALATE FROM GLYCEROL OF PALM OIL

The synthesis of trimethylene terephthalate polymer using glycerol as the starting material from biodiesel by-product has been carried out. The use of glycerol as the starting material was aimed to improve the economic value of glycerol. Further reaction becomes trimethylene terephthalate polymers, produce environmentally friendly polymer. Glycerol was isolated by transesterification reaction of palm oil with alkaline-catalyst KOH. Result of glicerol was 82% yield. Furthermore, trimethylene terephthalate polymer was synthesized by 3 steps reaction, (1) dehydration of glycerol with formic acid to give allyl alcohol by distillation method at 195-260 °C, (2) hydroboration of allyl alcohol using BF3 in THF and oxidation using peroxide, to produce 1,3-propanediol, and (3) reaction between 1,3-propanediol and terephthalic acid with p-TSA (para-toluene sulfonic acid) catalyst to give trimethylene terephthalate polymer. Structural characterization was done by means of IR, 1H-NMR and GC-MS spectrometers. Allyl alcohol was produced by distillation method of glycerol in 66% yield. The hydroboration-oxidation reaction of allyl alcohol produced 1,3-propanediol in 63% yield and polymerization between 1,3-propanediol and terephthalic acid afforded poly trimethylene terephthalate in 10% yield with molecular weight of 33,155.24 g mol-1 1 (n = 165).
