2015 | Skripsi | FMIPASynthesize of PVA-magnetite-natural clay film composite and tudy on the effect of base activated clay on mechanical and magnetic properties of the composites have been conducted. The aim of this research was to study impact of base activated clay addition on magnetite stability in composite, mechanical properties, and magnetic properties stated as saturation magnetization (Ms). This research was conducted using PVA, natural clay and base activated clay, and FeSO4?7H2O as the materials. Base activated natural clay was made by heating natural clay with 2 M of NaOH for 6 hours at 98-100 ?C in autoclave. The solid from activation with size 400 mesh was made into composite with PVA and magnetite by drop-wisely its suspension to PVA solution followed with Fe(OH)2 sol at 70 ?C. The suspension was casted in Petri dish and dried at room temperature until the film composite was formed. The variations of activated clay amount were 0; 0.01; 0.05; 0.1; 0.15; and 0.2 g was done to study the effect of clay amount on mechanical and magnetic properties of the composites. The composites were characterized using FTIR spectrophotometer, XRD, Material Testing Maching, and Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM). The results show that magnetite will be formed in the composite with base activated clay, while natural clay will cause magnetite be oxidized into goethite which has no strong response to external magnetic field. The increasing of base activated clay amount tends to increase the elongation of the composites. The value of Ms will be greater with the increasing of clay amount since the magnetite particle size will decrease.
