2015 | Skripsi | FMIPAPreparation and characterization of toothpaste based on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) and the examination of its antibacterial activity against mouth bacteria, Streptococcus mutans have been studied. The research purpose was to make an inovation based on VCO using its natural antibacterial properties. This research was initiated by the preparation of VCO based soap as one of the materials used in the toothpaste preparation. There was a variation to the formula of the samples based on the amount of VCO added into the toothpaste samples start from 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% (V/W). Some characters that a toothpaste needs are the homogeneity, the match of viscosity and pH to the standard so the characterization also has been done in this research to find a good composition of toothpaste. The last, all of the samples were examined their antibacterial activity against mouth bacteria, S. mutans, using dilution method and the inhibitory zone formed was observed for 4 week. The characterization results showed that toothpaste samples with about 15- 20% VCO had the closest characters to the standard’s. Its viscosity was about 70447 and 69184 cP, the pH was about 8.4 and became 7.3, and it had a good homogeneity during one month storage. This formula also has a good antibacterial activity with inhibition diameter of 2.08 and 5.16 mm for 4 weeks observation time against S. mutans.
