Synthesis of some azo, imine, azo-imine and chalcone-imine derivatives from vanillin could be used as anion sensors. Azo derivative was synthesized by diazotation reaction to produce 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-(p-phenyl-azosulfonate) benzaldehyde (1). Imine derivative, 2-methoxy-4-(p-phenyliminosulfonate)- phenol (2), was obtained through the Schiff base imine reaction. Compound 1 was refluxed with aniline to yield azo-imine derivative, the 2-methoxy-6-(phenyldiazo)- 4-(p-phenyliminosulfonate)phenol (3). Chalcone-imine derivative produced by Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction, was then treated Schiff base imine reaction to produce 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenyl-2-propene-1- phenylhydrazon (4). The compound 1, 2, 3 and 4 were analyzed as anion sensor with 9 saturated salt anion such as carbonate, sulphate, posphate, cyanide, acetate, fluoride, kloride, bromide dan iodide. The detection limit was determined to cyanide anions sensor using UV-vis. Yield for compound 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 28, 45, 28 and 45% respectively. UV-vis results indicate that compounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 can be used as a sensor for cyanide, carbonate, acetate and posphate anions. Cyanide anion has detection limit for compound 1, 2, 3 and 4 values of 1x10-4; 2.5x10-4; 5x10-5 and 1x10-3 M, respectively.
