A colorimetric sensing of ferric ion assisted by Ag nanoparticles has been devised. A linear decrease in the absorbance of the 5 ppm colloidal Ag nanoparticles was observed with increase in ferric ion concentration. When o-phenanthroline was added to the mixture, the solution color changed from yellow to red, indicating that reduction of ferric ion occurred. The decrease in absorbance is believed due to the decrease in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the colloidal Ag nanoparticles. The limit of detection of ferric ion analysis using this colorimetric method is about 10 ppb, much lower than that of any other available methods
