2011 | Disertasi | PROGRAM STUDI S2 ILMU KIMIAThe activated carbon has been prepared from cassava peel as an adsorbent for the adsorption of cyanide ions in water medium. Preparation of the activated carbon was done by carbonization process at the temperature of 500oC for 2 hours and pyrolysis process at temperature of 800oC for 2 hours under N2 flow and then activated with HCl. The activated carbon was characterized by infrared spectrophotometric method (FTIR), the moisture content, ash content, volatile matter content and the iodine number test. Carbon from cassava peel was then used for cyanide ion adsorption in water medium at pH 3 to 11 and the contact time of 5 to 120 minutes. FTIR analysis results show the existence of C = C, COH, C = N and CH fungtional groups. Activated carbon produced contained water of 4%, 2.3% ash, volatile matter content of 15%, carbon 78.64% and iodine number 616.589 mg/g. The study of cyanide adsorption by activated carbon from cassava peel showed that maximum adsorption occurs at pH = 10 with adsorption capacity of 39.72 mg/g. Study of the adsorption kinetics of cyanide by cassava peel activated carbon followed the pseudo second order kinetics with ks of 3.93 x 10-1 g mol-1 menit-1.
